19th september 2007 - garden get together and alergija

the garden in croatia has quickly become a highly praised venue and festival due to the excellent ethics and effort of the promotions team. so much so that this is the third time i've been compelled to blog it - previously doing so here and here.... now that is value for money

alergija is arguably the most popular home-grown band in croatia and stipa, the lead singer, also happens to be one of the garden family. the bands unique brand of ska inspired punk is well worth checking out and it's heartening to know that the youth of this region of europe is so inspired by their genuine creativity. ... mosh it up.

21st april 2007 - camera review

about the price of a roll of film (with developing), the 'innovage mini digital camera' boasts a pop up viewfinder, is the size of a matchbox and is, in a sense, bad enough to be celebrated. it's a camera / webcam with a video function and they reckon you'll catch classic, 'unpredictable' moments with family and friends.

perhaps with the instincts of a fighter pilot you have an outside chance of catching the babys first crawl, but no chance of getting uncle john falling into the river during that fishing trip. even if you had the dexterity to switch it on, select function, frame and time the shutter-lag just right, a quick pencil sketch would give more detail. the results will leave you disgruntled and your family and friends utterly bemused at your cheapness.

high resolution stores 20 images on the 16mb build in card or up to 60 in 'compressed' mode (actual size results below). low resolution is not worth typing about. it can shoot single or continuously in photo mode and annoyingly switches off automatically after 30 seconds standby.

keep one in the glove compartment of your car in case you crash, chuck one around your friends at a house party and use it as a key fob but for goodness sake don't record anything remotely meaningful on it.

i had a food shoot in town this evening and tested it walking from sherwood rise through the forest and arboretum parks during soft evening light before dusk.

tibetan new year - 18th feb 2007

there will be a few celebrating tibetans around at the moment as it is new year (losar) - 18th february marked the beginning of the festival and there will be sore heads for the next month or so. it is the year 2133 by the lunar calender.

tibet has been occupied by china since 1959 and up to 2.6 million of the 6 million population may have been killed in brutal ethnic cleansing. to this day many tibetans risk death-by-nature to escape the oppression and cross the himalayas on foot, hoping to reach the nepal boarder. if they survive they then have the opportunity of staying at one of the many isolated refugee settlements in india, first set up by nehru in the indian foothills. these centers of tibetan life were intended to preserve what is a culture rich in wisdom and tradition in readiness for a return to tibet. however they become more permanent in india year on year, as hope of a change in china's politics seems remote.

amnesty international has this to say about china.

human rights watch also have an opinion..

here is what tibetans say

both india and tibetan culture will always be of interest to me.
i first went to india in 1991 when i was 18 and lived on a tibetan settlement teaching english. between then and 1997, (when i began working with music events), i visited india and the village a further 5 times and documented the changes occurring over time. the work was exhibited in 1999 at a solo show in london with support from kodak eastman, arquati and the nottingham trent university. the kodak eastman archive requested some prints for their collection and there was good press for the event in photo magazines. it is still an ambition to continue the project and publish a book.

the picture below was taken at tso pema just after losar in 1992, during a 12 yearly pilgrimage to visit guru rinpoches cave

24th feb 2007 - derry ireland

derry has strong links with all kinds of dance music thanks to the efforts of the 'deep fried funk' promoters, and now drum and base is being pioneered in this most musical of cities by global virus. first up 'move' played a superb dnb / scratch / hiphop mash up with a live drummer. their energy and playing did them credit considering it was only the trio's 2nd gig. really good stuff. following up, zyon base - a fast rising dnb producer living in belfast - tonight played his first gig in the north. many thanks to hago
hago (global virus) and dan (zyon base) both dj on northwestdrumandbase.

1st jan 2007 - new years eve nottingham

2006 was a strange year. there was the tragic loss of my long time friend scott and his new bride sandra, along with their unborn baby in the bahrain boat disaster. some old friends found out about their death through scott being splashed on the front of u.k. shite-rag 'the sun'. they reported our loss with a typical lack of accuracy and sympathy, so i hooked up with quality satirists private eye magazine to stitch them up.

summer went quickly and top festivals included the big chill, seeme, sonar, numusic, celtronic and an astonishingly good new festival called the garden. any road, i was glad when it turned 2007 and think the year ahead will be a smasher.

so it's new year, people have fun.
this year i was able to hang out in nottingham with friends who run leftlion. the photos are not very good, and i can not remember taking any as i was drunk as fish in vodka.

11th november 2006 - leeds england

the glass house in leeds is always rammed to the rafters. in the past it has had a lightweight reputation for music but it seems things have changed with the owners now going a little bit deeper.
a great venue and with the improved music policy a great little party.

15th december 2006 - shlomo nottingham

it's astonishing that shlomo is not better known. despite working with bjork, which led to 4.5 billion hearing his beatbox skills at the 2004 olympic launch, and his becoming an artist in residence at the south bank in london most people have failed to pick up on him.

shlomo takes beatboxing and develops the sound of all kinds of different music, using available technolegy and a drum kit.
hip hop and dnb are represented, whilst towards the end of his set the beats orchestrally layered in his loop mixer almost begin to sound operatic.

21st october 2006 - what to blog then?

photographs seem to do a good job passing my time and, since i'm not a particularly good writer, i think i'll just blog with photos randomly.

here's one now.

the bomb in nottingham using flash strobe, 1997. i hear it may have since closed

what i show here will be for the most part unpublished - some of my favorites that may not make it into print rather than cutting-room floor photos.

photograph many different things in daily life like plates of food, restaurant interiors and products.
i think the gig work i do is the most interesting and although i might slip in the occasional rare venison photo, may be on a bed of horseradish mash with elderberry and port jus, this blog will generally stick to music events.

if you would like to subscribe to future blogs then you can do so. that would be good. thanks for reading this. enjoy.
